DIY Hand Butter

I recently moved to a house heated by electric baseboards (yikes!), which means my house is exceptionally dry. When I ran out of my hand cream and the cracks in my knuckles started bleeding where they were cracked (double yikes!), I knew it was time to get on with my plan of making my own. So I started with Minimalist Beauty's DIY Hand and Nail Care recipe, and made a few minor changes.

The recipe calls for equal parts of shea butter, cocoa butter, and grapeseed oil and vanilla absolute oil for the smell.

I did a small bit of research (aka reading reviews of the products from New Directions Aromatics) and decided that I didn't want my hands to smell like cocoa for fear I would constantly be craving it, so decided to substitute aloe butter instead of the cocoa butter. Even though I requested they use as little packaging as necessary, I still felt there was way too much. Especially for a box full of plastic containers!

I also substituted lavender essential oil rather than vanilla, because it was something I already had in my possession, and therefore didn't need to buy. Less waste and less money!

I also went to my local thrift store and got a lovely super thick walled small pot to use. It cost me a whole of $5, and means I don't need to worry about mucking up my cooking pots with these types of experiments.

As per the directions, I put the butters and oil into the pot and put it on the lowest setting to melt.

Butters and oil in the pot
Once they were melted, I turned off the stove, and let it cool just a bit.

All melted!
I added the lavender, then split up the mixture into small screw top aluminum containers that I got for this purpose. I needed something I could throw in my bag without worrying that the top would come off!

Individual container of liquid hand butter
I then let the containers cool overnight. When I woke up, I had two containers filled with hand and nail butter! No more need to buy hand cream!

After using the hand and nail butter, I decided the formula was too oily for my liking, so I scooped up all of the butter from the containers and put it back into the small pot to melt it down again. I then added another 1.5 oz of each butter and another 10 drops of lavender once the new mixture was cooled.

I am very pleased with the final results, and will continue to make this instead of buying hand cream! It still feels a little bit oily on my skin after putting it on, but it's much better than the first iteration.

Materials to make this cost me $7.37 for 7 oz or approximately 210 mL. Less than half the price of the body butters at the Body Shop, and I have control over the ingredients.

P.S. The containers I got only hold 2 oz each, so I put the remaining 3 oz into a washed out yogurt container. Not as pretty nor transportable, but much better for reducing waste.

I hate the gym

Since University I've been a pretty active person, but more with sports like Ultimate Frisbee. My old roommate was an avid gym goer, going nearly every day. I've had a few gym memberships over the years, but they've always ended up being a waste of my money, in my opinion. I always swore that I'd never get one again. I guess there's a reason that people say 'never say never'.

I couldn't pass up this groupon for $22 for 2 months at the Wynn Fitness near my house. Seeing as I slacked big time with my running training, and I'd like to have an option to run on a treadmill when the weather gets to bad to go out. They also have some Yoga and Spin classes that work with my training schedule.

If you're in the GTA, it might be worth checking out!

Brantford 10K Resolution Run Recap

I was really excited to be running on New Year's day, even though everyone I told about it thought I was crazy. I'm not a huge fan of doing things on New Year's eve, so it was good to have another reason to be chill for the night.

I drove to Hamilton on New Year's eve, and spent the night with my cousin, Ali, and her family. It was pretty quiet, which was perfect, considering we were running 10K the next day.
Ali and I left ourselves an hour to get to Brantford, find parking and pick-up our race packs. Even though we left a little later than planned, we still had plenty of time to do all of those things! This was so different from all of the other huge runs I've done, in that we parked about 50 meters from the Brampton Armoury, which is where the race started and ended.

We were behind only one other person to pick-up our race kits and bibs. I thought this was seriously amazing!

Ali and I hung out at the Armoury for the race to Start. It always amazes me how easily Ali approaches other runners and starts conversations with them.

I was really nervous going into the run because my training fell off at the end of November when I moved out of my old apartment and was couch surfing for two weeks, followed by the holidays.

We walked over to the starting line, where the elite runners stripped down to shorts and tank tops, which I thought was nuts given how cold it was!

I thought Ali and I were much better dressed for the occasion, although my hat took off about 3 km in because I was too hot.

The race started, and Ali took off.  I've always run in the middle of the pack, but in this race I was always worried I last. And as soon as the 5k runners turned left to the finish line, I was dead last! As I was crossing the road to start my 2nd 5k, I saw the elite runners just coming up the final stretch of their 10k races.

There were a lot of photographers along the route, and despite the fact that my bib was covered the entire time (I should have put it on my coat!), my photos came up when I searched!

Coming around the corner at the 3k mark
It turns out I had reason to be nervous about this race. I struggled both mentally and physically the whole way. I thought about taking more in-run pics, since I was clearly last anyways, however I was worried that I might not start running again!

I was sooo happy to walk for water at the 7.5k mark
Ali was cheering me on at the end of the race. She told me later she was nervous how long I was going to be.

Nearly done! Look at that heel strike!

Considering my last official 10k was a notoriously fast and downhill one, and given how much I struggled with this race, I'm super stoked that I finished in 1:14:02, only 2 minutes above my PR.

Ali and I walked to the Armoury, where the 5k awards were taking place. We picked up some of the post race food, which included soup, chili, samosas, veggies. I was feeling a little nausea  so I only had a small bit of chili and a samosa, but they were both delicious.

Between the awards for the 5k and 10k, there were some door prizes, and I won one!  Since they were all based in Brantford, and I wasn't sure when I'd be back, I picked up a hair cut and gave it to Ali.

We waited to hear the time for the girl who won in our age category, which was around 52 minutes, then picked up some cake! I knew it was a bad idea, but I couldn't help myself!

Before leaving, we thanked Bill, the race director, for inviting us to race. He's got on one of the long sleeve race tees on. They're really comfy, and fit well!

This was the first race in the 2013 Brantford Tournament of Races Road & Trail. The other races in the series are

  • April 28th Rotary Classic Races
  • July 1st Canada Day Trail Races
  • July 28th Brantford Grand Trail Races
  • September 6th Summer Night Road Races
  • September 23rd Brant Waterways Trail Races
I think it's fair to say that I will be back to run another one! Despite how terrible I felt, it was a very positive experience.
